The 'Smile'
The Smile! - Trevor J. James flutes Vs Others

The real secret to designing a student flute is to manufacture an instrument that brings a smile to the face of the young student making an attempt at their first note. Most student flutes do not encourage easy sound production and therefore the students become discouraged and begin to lose heart. It is imperative therefore that the design and manufacture of the flute headjoint is free-blowing and easy to play.

Designing and manufacturing to the requirement of the musician is an exacting task. The headjoint, as the most important part of the flute, has been the focal point for the Trevor J. James & Co. research and development. Designing a single headjoint, which captures the desires and requirements of all flute players has and will probably never be achieved. During research with performers and teachers Trevor J. James & Co. found certain definitive areas of general agreement. They required for their students;
  • A free blowing headjoint
  • Freely available tonal color
  • Ease of sound throughout the range
  • Stable overtones
  • Powerful lower register
  • Equality of sound throughout
To ensure that all these requirements were catered for, Trevor J. James & Co. has designed an outstanding range of free blowing headjoints, which musicians and teachers agree, encompass the above requirements. As a specialist flute company, we understand the importance of the headjoint.

Unlike most other manufacturers, we do not manufacture a standard headjoint for our complete range. Instead we have studied and researched what tonal requirements a new flute student through to a professional desires.
